Happy Kids mean Happy Family Photos

Ensuring kids are happy during a family photoshoot can make a big difference in the outcome. Here are some tips to keep them cheerful and cooperative:

  1. Schedule Wisely: Plan the photoshoot at a time when your kids are usually well-rested and fed, avoiding nap times or meal times.

  2. Bring Snacks and Drinks: Keep some healthy, non-messy snacks and drinks on hand to keep energy levels up and avoid hunger-induced meltdowns. (we all get hangry sometimes)

  3. Comfortable Clothing: Dress them in comfortable clothes they like. Avoid itchy fabrics or overly tight outfits. Bringing an extra set of clothes can be helpful too.

  4. Involve Them in Planning: Let the kids have a say in some aspect of the photoshoot, like choosing an accessory or a toy to bring. This can make them feel more engaged and excited.

  5. Play Music: Playing their favorite songs can create a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

  6. Bring Favorite Toys or Props: Having familiar items can make kids feel more at ease and can also be used creatively in photos.

  7. Be Playful: Turn the photoshoot into a game or play session. Capture candid moments of fun and laughter rather than forcing posed shots. Explore the location, let them run, jump, dance, tickle, all things fun!

  8. Remember Their Attention Span: For some kids, keeping the family photos session short to match their attention span. If you choose a location with lots to explore, you can often enjoy a longer session as the kids are able to investigate the location, play, and enjoy the family photoshoot more.

  9. Use Positive Reinforcement: Praise and encourage them throughout the shoot. Small rewards or promises of a fun activity afterward can be motivating. For some this means ice cream after the session, for others it could be donuts or french fries for breakfast. Even having a small dollar tree race car or toy as a reward will work.

  10. Work with a Kid-Friendly Photographer: Choose a photographer experienced with children, who knows how to engage with them and capture their best moments naturally. (LIKE ME!)

  11. Be Patient and Flexible: Kids might not always cooperate as planned, so go with the flow and be ready to adapt. The more relaxed you are, the more relaxed they are. Don't stress, redirect or let the photographer take the lead to keep their attention and trust they will provide you a gallery of beautiful images.

  12. Practice Posing at Home: Get them used to the idea of a photoshoot by practicing poses and smiles at home. Make it fun and casual.

Remember, the key is to keep the atmosphere light and enjoyable, focusing on capturing genuine expressions and moments.
