Capturing those first precious moments with your newborn is something every parent looks forward to and something I, as your friendly local newborn photographer, take very seriously. When we’re planning to take photos at your home, adding your dog to the session can bring extra warmth and create memories you’ll cherish for years. Your dog is part of the family, and getting them involved in the newborn photoshoot can bring out genuine joy and make for beautiful, memorable photos. Here’s a a few ways I make your newborn-and-dog photoshoot a fun and successful experience, complete with some simple tips to keep it safe and enjoyable.
Choosing the right time of day is key, especially when you’re working with a newborn’s schedule. Mornings often have the best natural light, which is why the majority of my newborn photography sessions happen then. Be sure your baby has just been fed and is likely to be calm and sleepy when I arrive. A full belly often means a content baby, making it easier to get those dreamy, relaxed shots. For your dog, consider a quick walk or play session beforehand to help them burn off a little energy. This way, they’ll be more willing to sit still for those adorable, cuddly shots.
Next, think about the location. Natural light is your best friend when it comes to at-home photography, so I always try to set up near a big window or in a room that gets lots of light. Often I use the living room, master bedroom and/or nursery depending on how the light is. Choose colors and textures for everyone to wear that complement your baby’s and dog’s coats, so they look harmonious in the frame without too much contrast or distraction.
I always begin with letting your dog’s natural curiosity lead the way. Often, your dog will lean in to sniff or gently nuzzle your baby, creating spontaneous, heart-melting moments. If you want a shot with your baby held in your arms or swaddled, keep your dog close by, perhaps sitting next to you or lying at your feet. Dogs often respond well to simple commands like “stay” or “sit,” so have a few treats on hand as gentle encouragement. Just remember to keep things playful and light—if your dog isn’t feeling up to it, give them a break and try again later.
Safety is, of course, essential. We will keep a close eye on both your baby and dog throughout the photoshoot. Never force any poses that make either of them uncomfortable, and always be prepared to step in if your dog gets overly excited. A quick cuddle break or a short pause can do wonders for the mood and bring out the sweet, natural interactions you’re hoping to capture.
Creating these memories at home allows me to capture the spirit of your family in an authentic, relaxed way. With a bit of preparation and patience, you’ll end up with a collection of photos that showcase the unique bond between your baby and your furry best friend—moments that will only grow more special as time goes on.
